In 2010 Miami Law established the country’s first Mindfulness in Law Program, reflecting its commitment to preparing students at the highest levels of academic excellence while providing the tools to support and develop their intellectual gifts and cultivate greater emotional well-being.

The program is led by Scott Rogers, an internationally recognized leader in mindfulness in law, author of the leading textbook on the subject., and columnist for the Florida Bar News and ABA Journal's GP Solo Magazine. Students are introduced to mindfulness at Orientation and have the opportunity to learn about and practice mindfulness through various mindfulness practice offerings taking place each week, known as Mindful Spaces, and across the semester. In their first semester at Miami Law, students can participate in the multi-session Jurisight workshop, which has been offered each semester at Miami Law since 2008.

Upper-level students may enroll in mindfulness courses, including:

  • Mindfulness in Law
  • Mindful Ethics
  • Mindfulness & Negotiation
  • Mindfulness & Motivating Business Compliance with the Law
  • Mindful Leadership

The law student organization, the Insightful Mind Initiative, founded in 2009 is the first law school mindfulness organization in the country, and offers students the opportunity to meet and explore mindfulness and other wellness practices, and serve in leadership role to support their community.

In 2010, the deans of Miami Law and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences established UUMindfulness, the University of Miami's Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. More than 10 peer-reviewed research papers have been published on the efficacy of the mindfulness training program co-developed by Professor Rogers.

Since its founding, more than 2,000 law students have been introduced to mindfulness. Alumni of the program have gone on to share mindfulness practices with their law firms, legal organizations, and corporate clients. You can learn more about the Mindfulness in Law Program by contacting Professor Rogers. The program is grateful to the legal community for its financial support and the contributions of lawyers and judges who share their mindfulness practice journey with students.
